To Blog or not to Blog?

When channeling your inner Hamlet, The answer: To Blog. Like Nike: Just do it. Blogging is projecting information in form of written communication through either text or multimedia forms including but not limited to hyperlinks, videos, pictures, and comments.

This Comm240 class presented me with the task and challenge of setting up my own person blog, posting content, and interacting with other bloggers in my class through the forms of comments. This whole blogging business is something that I had never done before, and to be rather blunt, it was something I didn’t think I would ever want to do, nor did I ever expect to enjoy it. Boy was I wrong.  After blogging for this class, I not only enjoy blogging, but I now consider it a skill that I have. booger-blogger

Since I have only been blogging for under 4 months, I would not consider myself an expert, but I have learned a few things that have helped make me a better booger, I mean blogger.

Some advice I would give to future bloggers:

  1. Have an open mind.

When first approaching a blog, it is best to have an open mind. When I first started blogging, I was very close minded because I didn’t really think blogging was going to be for me. Having a negative mindset creates a mental block which prevents you from blogging to the best of your ability. When you sit down to blog, just let the thoughts flow. Don’t think too hard. Blogging is done best when you let the words flow onto the screen.

flow-game-screenshot-1

2. Use a variety of multi media forms.

Bloggers don’t want to read a rant about how bad your schools cafeteria food is… unless of course you make it interesting and include photos of the green chicken, or the slimy meatballs. The phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” is entirely true in blogging. Reading content is all good, but pictures add an addition element that can’t be expressed through text. Other interesting forms of multimedia include hyperlinks and videos. These elements make the blog more interesting and engaging.

3. Have fun with blogging, but be professional.

It is important to remember that what you put out there on the internet is out there for anyone and everyone to see. So keep that in mind when you go on a rage about how stupid your teacher is and how you hope she gets hit by a bus… because one day you’re going to be looking for a job and employers may happen to stumble across a block that you wrote when you were young, dumb, and infuriated, but the blog is still your words and represents your image and who you are. The best thing to do when blogging is have fun! you can say your thoughts and speak your mind, but always remember, what you put out there is out there for ever and it can be used to make or break you!

stop_complaining

In life, people have a lot to complain about: the weather, driving habits, their significant others, the list is endless. In college, the complaints are more entertaining and some rather sad.

complain

These complaints can be posted for the world to see on an app called yik yak. Okay so maybe the whole world can’t see what you post, but people in the same geographical area can. I had heard of yik yak multiple times from friends and had heard it referenced before on campus. I downloaded yik yak to see what all the buzz was about and I think it was potentially the worst thing I could have done.

I realized that college kids have a lot of pointless comments to make, and a lot to complain about. Holy cow!

complainn

These people type a message in less than 200 characters to then be posted to the yik yak app where those around you can read your yak, vote it up or down if they like it, respond to it, and also click on it to see where exactly you were located when you posted it.

After scrolling through countless yaks about everything from Netflix and Chill, to not having a cuddle bae, to the crappy food in the caf; I decided that yik yak is a black hole of pointless babbling for those who have no one who wants to listen to them. All of these stupid complaints that college students have can all be found on one central place called yik yak. So what makes yik yak different from twitter or facebook? Well people can bitch and moan (excuse my French) all they want, and it is COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS! So when you “jus wish you had a gur who down to chill and smoke” no one will know that you low key have no friends and no one wants to do illegal things with you.

Although yik yak is a pitiful way to project your problems to anonymous viewers around you, I will say that it is rather entertaining. After downloading and using this app, I will say that the only advice or improvement that I would make would be for people to stop complaining so much. Life is a beautiful thing, so shut your yik yak.

Tammy is not Terrible!

When considering what movie I wanted to look up a critique of, I had a bit of trouble. I usually don’t have time to watch a lot of movie, but over the weekend my roommates and I made time to watch the movie Tammy. Some trailers for the movie can be found here.

The critique I found was on the popular movie review site: Rotten Tomatoes

The review gives Tammy, played by Melissa McCarthy  a low score of 23% and an average rating of 4.3/10.

I feel that these ratings are inaccurate and I disagree with the critics consensus.

I found the movie to be extremely entertaining and down-right hilarious! I was laughing so hard that I cried in numerous parts throughout the film. The story line was rather scattered but I thought it had to be considering the crazy dynamic of the character. In a critique by Roger Ebert, he agrees with me for the most part. He commends McCarthy for her humor and compliments her spontaneity when it comes to improvisation and unexpected punch lines. He does comment on the fact that this is not the first time that we see McCarthy in this discombobulated, vulgar, and rather ruthless character. One ridicule that he gives is that we want to see McCarthy in another time of role. We know she can play this type of character, but what else does she have to offer. I entirely agree with him in this critique. Although he gives the movie 2.5 out of what I feel should be a well deserved 3/3 stars, I would have to say that his critique is well thought out and explained. You can check out the complete critique by Roger Ebert here.

Tammy is one of the only movies I have seen recently, and fortunately for me, it happens to be one of the better ones. If you haven’t spent time laughing the night away with Tammy yet, I would definitely recommend you do so, you wont regret you did.

Many forms of PR have been used to help communicate the event and to raise awareness of Kings harvest.

We have sent out multiple emails informing Ambrosian email users of the event.

The emails are only one method of out reach to inform students of the event. Unfortunately, college students are busy. And although we are constantly on our phones and computers, we still find a way to avoid checking our emails. The class realizes this issue and is well aware of it because students in the class are guilty of this themselves.

In other efforts to actively promote the event, the class has set up multiple forms of social media to get the word out about the event:

It’s Sweet to Tweet

So I am a 21 year old college student, and I have never had Twitter. I know what Twitter is and I know people who use it, but I never gave in and got wrapped up in the Twitter world; until this class.

After much reluctance, I now have a Twitter that I most likely will use only for this class. After messing around with it a little bit, I found Tweeting to be kind of fun and I now think that It’s Sweet to Tweet!

Social Media for Me

In a world of ever changing technologies, humans are continuously striving to find methods of staying connected. A huge part of staying connected is the many forms of social media. Technological advances have immensely impacted the efficiency of these different social media platforms. An exploration of 23 different types of social medias defines various methods that are most familiar like social networking sites such as facebook, and myspace. ; as well as those that are no as highly utilized like podcasting community blubrry.com.

For me, the largest social medias that I use are snapchat and instagram.snapchatinstagram

I use snapchat the most frequently, probably 3-10 times in every hour, if not more.

Snapchat is used to communicate with friends. I send and receive pictures daily actually, constantly, of selfies and whatever is currently going on with my friends and myself. I use snapchat to not only hear about but to see what is going on back home, with my friends that are far away at school, as well as close to me at Ambrose. Snapchat is a sweet and simple, easy and personal way to keep up to date with what’s going on in their lives and to update them on what my daily adventures entail. This is discussed further in an interesting analysis by Lauren Sutton.

I use instagram to follow some of my favorite sports teams as well as people and organizations that I would not otherwise be able to see. Instagram allows for a larger viewing platform of more audiences. Instagram does not give the consistent updates that snapchat does, rather highlights key points that viewers would be most interested.

I wish that snapchat could connect you with more people around you. For example, there is the local Iowa story that any user in Iowa can upload media to and select videos are highlighted on the Iowa story. I think it would make the social media platform of snapchat more interactive and interconnected if user who are around the area of the highlighted snapper could somehow reply or comment on the snap so that they could potentially network or share the experience together.

Regarlsess of what tye of social media platform you use, there is no dout that advances in technology have made the connection of people by means of their devices more efficient. In an ever changing world, we all still stay connected, especially through social media.

Top 10 stressors of PR

I am not expert on the PR field, yet! But what I can tell you is that if you are wanting to go into the business of public relations, you are going to have to have tough skin and be willing to handleanything and everything that gets thrown at you. Although it is a few years old, an article written by Ragan’s PR Daily shares how people who work in the Public Relations field have one of the top most stressful jobs in the work industry. In 2012, The PR industry was rank 7th for most stressful jobs. Last year, Ragan’s PR Daily came out with another reflection on the ranking of the PR profession.

After some personal experiences and research of the industry, I have consolidated a once long list of stressors for PR, into this concise blog of top 10!

TOP 10 Stressors of PR

1. Part one: Public: The first word of the job title itself is stressful enough. Public: humans, people. People are difficult. And quite frankly, some people are just plain stupid.

stupid peple

2. Part two: Relations: the second part of the job title is even more stressful. Relations: as a PR professional, you have to relate to all audiences and all subject matters. That’s not easy.

3. The truth hurts: The cardinal rule of PR: always tell the truth. Often times people are afraid, offended, or just hurt by the truth.

4. Under the microscope: you are the face of the public so your every move is being watched by everyone, everywhere. Don’t mess up.

5. Tight deadlines: When news breaks and needs to be communicated, people need to know about it NOW!

6. High profile individuals: your job is to communicate on some of the most famous and influential people in the world; no pressure.

7. Constant communication: Communication in all forms is your job. You have to be able to read, write, talk, speak, call, email, text, blog, tweet, Facebook, Instagram, and that’s just the beginning!

8. Emotional involvement: When communicating breaking news and often unfavorable truths, it can be very difficult to keep one’s personal feelings and emotions separate from the job and the message they must convey.

9. Speaking in front of large crowds EVERYONE!: it is statistically shown that a majority of the population would rather be the one in the casket than the one giving the eulogy. In PR you never get the choice of being in the casket.

10. PR is your life: you have no option. You eat, breathe, and sleep it. Scratch that you cant sleep, no time for that.

PR comics: funny and true

In the world of PR, it is known that you are to always tell the truth. But no one ever said you can’t have fun with the truth. In an article from Jeff Domansky (Twitter), the PR coach, he explores the imaginative insight of creative cartoons in the PR world. Click here for The PR coach’s insight. The primary focus of the PR coach’s approach on PR and cartoons is the real life relevance they have to shining light on the way the world revolves around and relies on technology.We-have-lives-300x214

In today’s fast paced society, it is nearly impossible to go an hour without a reference to social media, internet, or some form of technological advance. People of all ages and generations are wrapped up in their individual worlds that revolve around technology. A book by Brian Solis called “What if PR stood for People and Relationships,” is available in digital picture format on slide share and gives a visual narrative of how technology directly influence today’s society. The PR coach investigates how PR revolves primarily on technology nowadays, when the main focus should be on people and relationships, not the digital world.

After reading through the book, or cartoon slideshow, rather, I think that Solis and Domansky touch, but could elaborate more, on the issue of real life interaction, rather than digital communications. Solis creatively uses comics to illustrate the reality of the lack of heart in digital communication as compared to the true value in natural human interaction. This is especially relevant to the PR world and the way information is collected, relayed, and responded to.

PR should be Heart to Heart

The comics give a humorous side to a very true matter. Consider how much time we spend searching for information, whether it be the latest drama, current events, news stories, celebrity or  political gossip, or any other topics that we consider important in real time. How is that time spent? ANSWER: hidden behind a computer, a tablet, TV or worst of all; a cellphone. When we jump out from behind our handy dandy techy devices and face the real live world that lies in front of us, we see that there is so much more out there that is waiting to be discovered. When we get out there and see the world for ourselves, we find so much more to personally report on than we could ever gather from technology. PR is more than public relations to a world shadowed by social media and celebrities; PR is people and relationships. PR is communication in a personal way that speaks to people’s souls and is done whole heartedly.

Interesting to think that humorous comics can bring such real issues to life in a world engulfed in technology.
